India's GST Council has decided to impose a 28% tax on online gambling, casinos, and horse racing bets. The move, driven by concerns about the ethical aspects of gambling and addiction among young people, is not intended to obliterate the industry but to address its societal impact

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council in India has decided to levy a maximum 28% tax on the full face value of wagers on online gaming, licensed online casinos, and horse racing. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the decision at the 50th meeting of the Council. Online gambling companies will now have to pay a tax of 28% on the entire amount collected from players.
